Calcium reduces cancer risk

Calcium Supplements May Reduce Colon Cancer Risk

BETHESDA, Md.--Calcium-containing dietary supplements reduce the risk of cancers of the colon, according to a study published in the November issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (80, 5:1358-1365, 2004) (www.ajcn.org). Calcium is thought to keep the colon cancer-free by binding secondary bile and fatty acids, or by acting directly on the colonic epithelium, which affects differentiation and apoptosis.

Scientists compared the supplemental and dietary calcium intakes of 3,696 participants with histologically confirmed adenoma of the distal colon (descending colon, sigmoid colon or rectum) with the calcium intakes of 34,817 control participants in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial. Calcium intake was assessed at baseline with a 137-item food-frequency questionnaire and additional questions on the amount and duration of calcium supplement use.

After adjustment for confounding factors, adenoma risk was 12 percent lower for participants in the highest quintile of total calcium intake (greater than 1,767 mg/d) than for participants in the lowest quintile (less than 731 mg/d). There was a 27 percent decrease in adenoma risk for participants taking greater than 1,200 mg/d of supplemental calcium than for nonusers of supplements. The protective associations of total and supplemental calcium were strongest for colon adenoma (descending and sigmoid colon). The researchers concluded high calcium intake, particularly from dietary supplements, is associated with a reduced risk of distal colorectal adenoma.
